Donate your extra supplies
help local teachers and students
Does your office have surplus supplies or outdated letterhead? Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools, a program of the Hillsborough Education Foundation, has the answer for you! Teaching Tools operates a store for teachers at high need Title-I schools where the teachers “shop” monthly for free supplies to bring back to their classrooms and at-risk students. During the spring time, the store receives fewer donations, but the teachers and students need for supplies remains ever present to get through the rest of the school year. How you can help? Teaching Tools distributes usable business surplus from the community back into the classroom. For example, companies that are cleaning out their supply closets, closing down an office or changing their information are all great candidates to donate their surplus back into local classrooms. Examples of items donated are binders, desk ware, outdated stationery or letterhead, filing cabinets, staplers, promotional items, etc. To learn more click here or call please call Bronwyn Fowler at 813-620-2949 or e-mail bfowler@educationfoundation.com.

Florida Architectural Political Action Committee
2006 Florida Primary Review

As one of the most highly regulated professions, Architecture is a hot issue for the Florida Legislature. Through contributions, the Florida Architect Political Action Committee, helps elect lawmakers who are supportive of a political agenda, and understand the architecture profession.

Through local input and political efforts, FAPAC contributed to the major players in the recent Florida 2006 Primary Election. Of the five challenged primary races, FAPAC saw a 60% win rate (three wins/two losses.) Click here for the FAPAC 2006 Primary Election review of candidates and races. Architects and interns are encouraged to share their thoughts, recommendations and insights on the various races.

AIA Tampa in the press
Chapter in the news

Recently, AIA Tampa Bay has received some media attention in local publications. The Tampa Tribune covered the AIA TB's July Historic Preservation Luncheon in Ybor City. Hosted by the AIA TB Architectural Heritage Committee, the luncheon featured a panel discussion about the future of local cigar factories.

In July's issue of Builder Architect Magazine, AIA Tampa Bay was recognized for receiving a $7,500 grant from AIA Nationals. The grant will launch, "A Learning Experience - Back to the Future Program," as component of the AIA National's community service program, "Blueprint for America." Read the article.

Architects Launch Community Service Program
Preserving Tampa's architectural Heritage

AIA Tampa Bay today was awarded a $7,500 grant by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Washington, D.C. to launch A Learning Experience - 'Back to the Future', a program that will help to educate high school students on the importance of maintaining the region's architectural heritage. The program is a part of a new nationwide community service program of the AIA titled "Blueprint for America: A Gift to the Nation." AIA Tampa Bay offers this initiative as a gift to the community. The AIA members' participation is provided at no fee. Read more.

2010 National Convention - Miami
EARLY REGISTRATION DUES ASSESMENT

The City of Miami has been selected as the site of the 2010 AIA National Convention!  As they begin preparations for this grand event, The Miami Component, as the Host Chapter, has requested a motion in support of statewide pre-registration of all AIA Florida members by way of a special membership dues assessment. The proposed dues assessment will allow all interested AIA Florida members to attend the convention without additional registration costs and for approximately one half of what it would cost to register for the convention in 2010.  This motion, if passed, would provide the Miami Component with some of the initial capital necessary to prepare to host this national event in our state. Read the letter sent to members.   The dues assessment would work out to approximately $35 per member, per year until the convention ($140) if instated in 2007.  Of special note is the fact that AIA National's $50 advertising dues assessment is set to expire next year.  Therefore, if the convention assessment is past, it will not cause the overall dues to increase for the foreseeable future.  State Directors representing each chapter will vote on this motion at the AIA Florida Convention coming up on July 27, 2006 at the AIA Florida Annual Meeting.  Our State Directors would like to hear your opinions, for or against the pre-registration dues assessment, so that they are able to vote on behalf of you - our membership. Read the full proposal.

Please forward your comments and questions to dawn@aiatampabay.com.
